Melges M15

The Melges 15, known as the M15, is an exciting new double hander first launched by Melges Performance Sailboats in 2020. Named the Boat of the Year by Sailing World for 2022, it's no wonder over 600 boats have been launched already.

Designed for stability and performance in a variety of conditions, and optimized for multi-generational and mixed-gender crews, the boat features a narrow overall beam and a flat cross-section shape for stability, righting moment, and ease of planing.

Modernized rigging keeps the sheet loads comfortable, the GNAV style boom vang keeps the cockpit roomy, and the asymmetric spinnaker offers an additional performance element featuring a single-pull launch and retrieval system for easy sail handling.

Sweet Sixteen

The Sweet 16 is a centerboard dinghy that was designed and built by Advance Sailboats right up the road in Independence, Missouri. Since 1962, over 500 hulls have been launched and many of them are still actively sailed all over the Midwest. Lake Jacomo boasts the largest active fleet with over 20 boats accounted for.

Stable, roomy enough for family and friends, easy to rig and trailer, and agile enough to be raced competitively as a one-design, the Sweet 16 is a good choice for beginners looking to explore the sport of sailing without making a large initial investment. Many experienced sailors love this boat for the same reasons.

The club owns many of these boats and uses them as our primary boat for Learn to Sail training and BoatShare. Most of our club members have owned or sailed a Sweet 16 through the years too!

Laser

The Laser is one of the most popular boats in the world! With over 225,000 sold, the production numbers speak volumes of the adaptability and enjoyment of this single-handed boat.

Designed by Bruce Kirby and Ian Bruce in 1970, three interchangeable rigs of different sail areas can be fitted to the same hull for a given combination of wind strength and crew weight. The lightweight hull makes for a fun ride and promotes quick skill improvement while also allowing for car-top transportation.

The Laser, known also as the ILCA Dinghy, has been an Olympic class boat since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. With sailors in 120 countries, its wide acceptance is attributable to its robust construction, simple rig, and ease of sailing which offers competitive racing due to tight class association controls that eliminate differences in hull, sails, and equipment.

The club currently has 5 boats and 2 Radial rigs available in the BoatShare program and a fleet that organizes additional sailing and education opportunities.

Thistle

The Thistle is a high-performance one-design racing sailboat that is generally sailed with a three-person crew. Thistles have a main, jib and symmetrical spinnaker sail plan.

They have a high sail area to weight ratio, are quick to plane thanks to the flat and wide stern, and are built to slice through waves with their plumb bow. It does well in a wide variety of conditions, planing easily in 10-12 knots of breeze and gliding effortlessly in light air.

RS Venture Connect

The RS Venture Connect builds on the original RS Venture design and adds a weighted keel for stability, options for side-by-side seating, and other modifications tailored to adaptive sailing.

The boat is sailed as a two-person crew with an asymmetrical spinnaker and twin rudders, making it possible for almost anyone to have fun on the water.

Portsmouth Handicap

Boats not represented as a one-design fleet are scored together to correct for differences in boat speed using the Portsmouth Handicap (D-PN).

Generally, this is implemented with the RS Venture, BoatShare Plus keelboats, and during our handicap regattas.
